Jamie stuffed some spare money in his wallet, which then went into his pocket along with a tissue and a bit from an old bridle, which peeked just out of the top of his pocket. Smiling, he checked his reflection, and thanked himself for it and he picked a few strands of straw out of his hair. He picked up the present he'd bought her, frowned at it, indecided by whether he should take it or leave it. Shaking his head, he left the dorm and went downstairs, checking he had his car-keys as he went, carrying what he'd bought for her. They jingled in his pocket as he crossed the car-park to his pick-up, where he would meet Bell. He held the gift in front of his as he leaned against the door of his car.

Nerves buzzed in his head - would she like it? Would she like him? Would she even come? He told himself he was worrying too much, and of course she'd come. She said so, didn't she? Grinning, he looked at the sun and thought of her face as he last saw it - in the field. That reminded him, Asbo would need riding when he got back. He'd probably already caused no end of trouble.

Bell came skipping through giggling on her cell phone before she turned it off and stopped at Jamie. Her black skirt swayed in the breeze and her black tank top said 'F*** the free world'. "Sorry about the shirt. I had nothing els but this one I think my romie is stealing my clothing again." She said.

Jamie looked at it and laughed out loud. "You have not seen some of the things my friends wear back at home." He grinned at her, then looked her up and down, his smile softening. "You look pretty... I don't even think your room-mate, nicking your clothes, could look better." He raised an eyebrow flirtingly, grinning.

"Anyway, let's go." He opened the door for her, bowing low and taking off an imaginary top-hat. "Your battered, old transport, my lady." He looked up, smirked happily and then stood up, and gazed happily at her. It was almost blindingly obvious.

Bell smiled and laughed before sitting in the car. She looked at her watch, again. She had a bad habit of doing that. She crossed her arms trying to hide her watch and looked out the window. Gray eyes not bright but nor where they dull.

His gaze drifted to her as he climbed in the other side and started it up. Rumbling, spluttering, then it jumped to life and chuggered away. There was a brief silence in the car as the pick-up pulled out of the carpark and down the dusty, summer road. Trees waved on either side, shedding much needed shade.

"So..." The atmosphere was tense. "Whats your favourite tree?" He asked, looking up at the tall silver birches and oaks flickering softly.

Bell thought about it but nothing came to her till she saw the beautiful silver birch. "I would have to say the silver birch." She said smiling as watched the trees go by. "What about you?" She asked looking over at him.

Jamie's face broke into a grin. "Me too. I love their leaves. Really elegant and stuff." He commented, gaze travelling over the trees that towered over the road. Then the sun was back as the trees ended, the car getting nearer and nearer the racecourse. A ferrari rushed past them, causing him to swerve into the ditch. His engine spluttered, then died.

"Idiot." He snarled, and jumped out of the car. "I'll just be a second." He pulled a small repair kit out of the boot of his car and opened the bonnet. He rooted round a bit, poking at it. It then coughed at him, and started to rumble. As he closed the bonnet, he looked like a cartoon mad scientist. His face was black with the oil that the pick-up had coughed out at him, and his hair had been blown back by the air that had rushed all at once out of the car. Grinning, he laughed and pulled a hankerchief out of his pocket and wiped his face, then tried to flatten his hair.

Jumping back in the car, he started it up. It rumbled, then died.

"Sorry about this." He grinned and jumped out, then kicked the engine as hard as he could. The car roared into life, chugging happily. He started it up, then drove off the last few minutes down the road until they reached the racecourse.

A smile crossed Bell's face as they drove into the parking lot. She quickly got out and looked around from where she stood. She say bay horses and chestnut horses. "Love this place. Wish I had a race horse sometimes but then I would probable wouldn't have Klaas then or Breeze." She said taking a few steps forward.

Jamie gazed around, a slight frown on his face. The thoroughbreds were absolutely gorgeous, high spirited, amazing. His breath was blown away by even looking at the beautiful horses, so full of life. He felt dull, bored in comparison. It was a little like a drug. Seeing them in action for the first time was the best he'd ever had. He smiled to her and locked the car, walking by her side. A horse reared, whinnying loudly.

"Asbo's a retired racehorse. Still as crazy as ever, though. His owner sold him because he lost a race. B******... why do they even have these horses if they're only using them for the money?" He shook his head, then grinned. He stopped talking as an announcement for the race before theirs was about to start. "We'd better get going, so we can get the best view of the horses." He said, looking around as horses began to file out of the showing pen. There was a huge black stallion, full of pride and spark.

It all flashed back. He was five years old. His father was racing on Gallileo, he and his mother were watching. The chestnut stumbled, the huge black stallion fell, and his father didn't get up, ever again. His mother was screaming, Jamie forgotten in the urge to try and get to her husband. Everyone was gasping, confusion was filling his world.

Then he snapped back to normal.
