Mitchie walked down the road, wearing a muddied pair of jodphurs and a khaki tank top. She was heading to town. She walked along the dried mud at the side of the road. Crack - then her dusty riding boot was wet with the mud that hadn't dried from under the covering. She stared up at the sky and swore, then stomped on.

She reached town and wandered through a few shops. There was just nothing that caught her eyes... just as well, as she didn't have much money. She'd need to get a job or something. She heard a horse squealing from a few streets away - the auctions were on today. Worth a look? She shrugged to herself and wound through the backstreets and onto where the stables, people and round pens all crowded together. She wandered over to a round pen that was about to start auctioning.

"Now we have Bright Light." She heard no more. Her eyes pulled immediately to the entrance, where a huge bay stallion pranced in. It was obvious - he was in great shape. Still... Mitchie's heart was in her mouth. Memories flooded back. Her eyes were wide and staring as he started to first walk, and then trot around. His strength almost pulled the leader off his poor feet. The kid just shrugged and stopped pulling his mouth, and let him canter.

She didn't listen to the man as he told the gaggle of people about the horse's history, and his health. There was a mist descending over her sense.

"So, bidding for the horse starts at $75." Mitchie raised her hand immediately. The auctioneer noted it, then moved onto a shady looking woman at the edge of the clearing. She put in $100. Mitchie narrowed her eyes, and bidded again. An old man put in a few bids, then sank out again.

"For $350." Mitchie raised her hand. She was now spending more than she had, every last little note. But he was so special! HOw old must he be now? 15, 16 years old? The voice in her head prodded and poked, but she ignored it.

The woman raised her hand. Mitchie kept bidding.

"$500. Any more bidders?" Mitchie raised her hand as high as she could, like a kid who really wanted the teacher to pick her when she knew the answer. The auctioneer nodded.

"Any more than $500? $550?" The woman didn't bid. Mitchie crossed all of her fingers and toes, then even twisted her tounge around.

"Going, going..."

"Gone." She whispered in time to him, focusing entirely on her new horse. She vaulted into the ring, ignoring the handlers warnings and threw her arms around the old champion's neck.

"Brighty... Brighty, Brighty, Bri!" She whispered, burying her face in his long neck as he blew gently into her face.

Mitchie was estatic. Her long lost thoroughbred walked at her side, and the sun was shining - warm now, instead of sweaty. She leaned her head against his, whispering to him as they walked home together. She'd wanted to take him straight away... and so she had. And now the horse she'd always wanted stood at her side.
